On February 6, 2027, the Moon passes in front of the Sun without quite covering it: a ring of light crosses the south of Chile and Argentina before sweeping out over the South Atlantic. Most of South America, the Antarctic Peninsula and western and southern Africa see a partial eclipse. Nothing is visible from Western Europe. What happens that day?

As it did a year earlier, the February new Moon takes good aim but turns up too far from Earth: its apparent disc, slightly smaller than the Sun’s, lets a brilliant ring spill over the edge. So no night in broad daylight, but that “circle of fire” which is the signature of annular eclipses, along with a light that dims eerily over the landscape.

The antumbra, the zone from which the ring is visible, touches Earth in the South Pacific, crosses the south of Chile and Argentina in the heart of the austral summer, then stretches long over the South Atlantic before leaving the surface of the globe.

Where and how to watch it?

The complete ring has to be earned: you’ll need to be on the narrow band that cuts across Chilean and Argentine Patagonia, in the local afternoon. Around it, a partial eclipse offers itself to almost all of South America, from Peru to Uruguay, as well as to the Antarctic Peninsula; at the very end of its run, the west and south of Africa see the Sun bitten into shortly before it sets.

From Western Europe, nothing to observe that day, beyond the live streams. And if you’re lucky enough to be there: never any naked-eye viewing, at any moment. An annular eclipse has no safe phase at all, the ring staying dazzling; only certified ISO 12312-2 glasses or pinhole projection let you enjoy it.

This eclipsed new Moon stands at 18° of Aquarius, deep in the heart of the sign this time, where the one in February 2026 held its threshold. The Leo-Aquarius run, now settled on the axis of the lunar nodes, unfolds its second solar chapter: tradition reads here a season of beginnings on the collective front, of shared ideas, of the belongings we choose.

An annular eclipse has its own nuance: the center veils over but the outline remains, and some astrologers see in it the image of a commitment that redefines itself without breaking.
