What happens that day?
A total lunar eclipse is Earth slipping precisely between the Sun and the full Moon. Our planet casts a cone of shadow out into space, and the Moon crosses it from edge to edge. It doesn’t vanish, though: Earth’s atmosphere bends the Sun’s light and lets only its red and coppery tones slip through. The Pacific takes center stage. Hawaii sees the whole eclipse in the middle of the night, high in the sky: the perfect seat. New Zealand and eastern Australia follow it in the evening; in Sydney, the peak falls around 22:34 local time, with the Moon well risen.
In East Asia, Japan, Korea and eastern China watch totality early in the evening, the Moon still close to the eastern horizon: in Tokyo, the peak arrives around 20:34. Over in the Americas, it’s the night of March 2 to 3: Alaska and the West Coast see all of it (peak around 03:34 in Los Angeles); the further east you go, the earlier the Moon sets, and the Atlantic coast watches it sink into the shadow just above the western horizon, right before dawn.
Europe and Africa are out of luck: at 12:34 in Paris, the Moon is below the horizon and the sky is in full daylight. Wherever it is visible, no precautions are needed: a lunar eclipse is safe to watch with the naked eye, and a simple pair of binoculars is enough to make the coppery tones spectacular.
