What happens that day?

On this January night, the full Moon passes along the edge of Earth’s shadow cone and dips in only at the shoulder: at the peak, a thin portion of the lunar diameter, barely a few percent, enters the full shadow. The rest of the disc crosses the penumbra, which dulls it gently.

The Americas see the eclipse in the dead of night, comfortably. Western Europe and West Africa catch it at the end of its run: in Western Europe, the peak falls at 5:13 Paris time, the Moon dropped toward the western horizon, still high enough to be clearly visible if the sky is clear.

No equipment required: the naked eye is enough, binoculars reveal the boundary between shadow and penumbra better. The visible phase spans about an hour around the peak; aim for the 4:30 to 6:00 window, then, before the winter dawn begins to lighten the sky in the east. A west-facing balcony does the job perfectly.
