What happens that day?

A solar eclipse is always a new Moon taking precise aim: the Moon passes exactly between Earth and the Sun. On this February 17, though, it sits far from us on its orbit, near its apogee. Europe sees nothing at all: from Western Europe, the Sun on this February Tuesday stays perfectly round.

If you find yourself in an affected region, the rule allows no exceptions: you never look at the Sun with the naked eye, even when it’s far gone. You need certified ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses, or indirect projection (a small hole in a piece of card that casts the Sun’s image on the ground).
