The moon in January January gives the moon its finest stage: the longest nights of the year, skies often crisp once the cold sets in, and a full moon that climbs very high, opposite the low winter sun.
The moon in February February is the month of the quiet turn: the days lengthen noticeably, the light comes back, but the cold still holds.
The moon in March March is the month when the moon changes season: the lunation straddles the equinox, the nights stop being longer than the days, the ground thaws.
The moon in April April is the month when the nights lose ground before your eyes: the evenings stretch out, the air softens, and the moon rises over a world bursting into bloom.
The moon in May May is the month when the night turns soft: you can finally stay out to watch the moon climb over gardens in flower.
The moon in June June is the month when the moon turns rare and precious: the nights are the shortest of the year, the sky is slow to go dark, and the full moon stays low on the horizon, often washed in amber.
The moon in July In July, the moon crosses the shortest nights of the year.
The moon in August In August, the nights finally lengthen and find a true darkness again: the summer sky unfurls once more, crossed in mid-August by the shooting stars of the Perseids.
The moon in September September is the month of the Harvest Moon, the full moon nearest the autumn equinox.
The moon in October In October the night takes the upper hand, and the full moon is called the Hunter’s Moon.
The moon in November In November, night falls early and the full moon already climbs high in the sky: this is the Beaver Moon, named after the animal finishing its lodge before the freeze.
The moon in December December carries the Cold Moon, the full moon of the longest nights of the year.
