What happens that day?

The July full Moon crosses the edge of Earth’s shadow cone: at its deepest, a little more than a third of its diameter bathes in the full shadow. A dark, round notch settles on the disc for a little over two hours, framed by the fainter penumbral phases.

The roundness of that notch is no small detail: it’s the shadow of Earth itself, cast on the Moon. The ancient Greeks already saw in it the proof that our world is a sphere, centuries before the first images from space. Every partial eclipse quietly replays that demonstration.

Where and how to watch it?

The best seats surround the Indian Ocean: East Africa, the Middle East, India, South-East Asia and western Australia see the eclipse in the dead of night or in the evening, the Moon well risen. Eastern Europe and Turkey catch it at moonrise, the notch already in place.

For Western Europe, the rendezvous is just missed: at the peak, at 20:20 Paris time, the Moon hasn’t yet risen; by the time it finally appears in the south-east, at dusk, the shadow is finishing its retreat. At best, the far east of the region makes out the very last minutes of the partial phase just above the horizon. If you’re traveling that summer toward Greece, Egypt or further east, look up: the show will be for you, with the naked eye and no danger.
