On the night of February 20 to 21, 2027, the full Moon crosses Earth’s penumbra without touching its full shadow: a penumbral eclipse, the faintest of the three kinds of lunar eclipse. At the peak, around 23:13 UTC (0:13 in Paris), an attentive eye makes out a soft darkening on one edge of the disc. It’s observable from the Americas, Europe, Africa and part of Asia, Western Europe included. The Moon stands at 2° of Virgo.

What happens that day?

Earth’s shadow has two storeys: a dark core, the umbra, where the Sun is entirely hidden; and around it, a zone of half-light, the penumbra, where the Sun is only partly blocked. That night, the full Moon slides deep into the penumbra without ever reaching the umbra: no clean bite, no red Moon, but a gradient of gray that slowly takes over one edge of the disc.

This is the eclipse for patient eyes. To a hurried glance, the full Moon simply looks a little less brilliant; to an attentive eye, especially around the peak, one side of the disc clearly appears duller than the other, as if the lights had been turned down on one side of the room.

Where and how to watch it?

The zone of visibility is wide: all of the Americas, Europe, Africa and western Asia have the Moon above the horizon for at least part of the event. In Western Europe, conditions are good: the Moon rides high in the winter sky, and the peak falls just past midnight, at 0:13 Paris time on the night of Saturday February 20 to Sunday February 21.

To stack the odds in your favor: compare the disc an hour before the peak and then at the peak, the darkening becomes obvious by contrast; binoculars help, and a photo taken at both moments helps even more. No protection needed, as with any lunar eclipse. And if the sky is hazy, nothing is lost: this rendezvous is an appetiser before the great solar eclipse of August.

What astrology reads into it

This full Moon stands in the first degrees of Virgo, facing the Sun in Pisces: a last echo of the Virgo-Pisces axis, which the eclipses left in the summer of 2026. Far from the lunar nodes, the alignment stays approximate, and that is precisely why the eclipse is only penumbral: the geometry already tells the end of a cycle.

Tradition readily reads these whispered eclipses as postscripts: what the Virgo-Pisces run had opened in 2025-2026 passes one last time, quietly, to make sure the page has truly been turned. Neither grand finale nor turning point: a gentle re-reading, at the scale of a diary entry.

The Moon will be eclipsed again on July 18, 2027, but so marginally that no one will see it with the naked eye. The rendezvous that counts arrives on August 2, 2027: a total solar eclipse over southern Spain, Egypt and the Red Sea, the longest land totality of the century, partial from Western Europe.
