Western Europe lives a spectacular partial that evening: more than 80% of the Sun hidden almost everywhere, up to 90% further south, in the early evening. What happens that day?

That evening, the new Moon takes perfect aim: its disc, close enough to Earth to appear larger than the Sun, covers it entirely. Along a narrow band, day goes out for a good two minutes: the stars come out, the temperature drops, the horizon takes on twilight colors through a full 360°. It’s the most arresting celestial experience there is, and it hadn’t touched the European continent since August 11, 1999, almost to the day.

The shadow’s path is unusual: it descends from the North Pole, grazes Greenland, crosses Iceland then the Atlantic, and ends its run over northern Spain just as the Sun is about to set. The maximum duration of totality, 2 minutes and 18 seconds, plays out in the open ocean, west of Iceland.

Where and how to watch it?

For totality, three lands share the band: north-east Greenland, western Iceland (Reykjavik included, in the early evening, a first there since 1954), then northern Spain, from the Cantabrian coast toward Zaragoza and as far as the Balearics. On the Spanish side, totality falls around 20:25 to 20:30 local time, with the Sun very low: you’ll want a perfectly clear western horizon, a hill, a coastline or a village rooftop.

From Western Europe, no dark night, but an exceptional partial: depending on the region, 80 to 90% of the Sun disappears behind the Moon, with a peak between 20:10 and 20:35 depending on the town. The hidden share grows further south: at the foot of the Pyrenees, only a thin crescent of Sun will remain above the horizon. The evening light will turn strange, metallic, as if turned down a notch. The north of America and the west of Africa also see a partial phase.

The safety rule is non-negotiable, even at 90% coverage: you never look at the Sun with the naked eye. You need certified ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses, in good condition, bought in advance; sunglasses, X-ray film and smoked glass do not protect you. Failing that, pinhole projection (a pinprick in a piece of card) shows the crescent with no risk at all. Only the seconds of totality, in Spain or Iceland, can be taken in with the naked eye.

What astrology reads into it

This eclipsed new Moon stands at 20° of Leo, the sign of the heart, of creation, of the space we dare to take up. Tradition reads a total eclipse as a new Moon underlined three times: a beginning whose momentum unfolds over months. That it crosses Europe gives it, for us, a particular relief; old astrology granted more weight to eclipses visible from home.

It arrives at the exact moment the lunar nodes tip onto the Leo-Aquarius axis, of which it becomes the grand front door. Leo invites you to sign what you do with your own name, to let the heart decide on a course; Aquarius, across the way, recalls the collective that this course is meant for. No event to predict: a threshold mood, that each of us crosses with our own story.

Two weeks later, on August 28, 2026, the same eclipse season closes with a deep partial lunar eclipse, visible this time from Western Europe in the small hours of the morning. And for the next total solar eclipse, the wait will be short: on August 2, 2027, the shadow will cross southern Spain and Egypt, with the longest land totality of the century.
