Detriment
Detriment, also called exile, is the sign opposite a planet's domicile, where it feels least at ease. Mars is in detriment in Libra and Taurus, Venus in Aries and Scorpio. Far from home, the planet acts with less assurance and its function meets friction there. It is one of the two essential debilities in traditional astrology, alongside fall.
Far from home
A planet in detriment is like someone on foreign ground: the codes are not its own, its usual gestures land less well. Its nature has not changed, only the setting resists it. Mars in Libra wants to act, but the sign nudges it to compromise, to negotiate, which thwarts its direct drive.
A constraint that works on you
Detriment is no sentence. Many strong charts house a planet in detriment, and that awkwardness often pushes one to develop unexpected resources. If you spot one in your map, read it as a place that asks for more adaptation, and that can, through effort, become a singularity rather than a lack.
