Mutual reception
Mutual reception describes two planets each placed in the sign the other governs. Mars in Cancer and the Moon in Aries are in mutual reception, since the Moon rules Cancer and Mars rules Aries. Astrologers read it as an exchange of good offices: each planet, host to the other, welcomes and eases it, like two neighbors doing each other a favor even with no direct aspect between them.
Two hosts helping each other
Picture two people each lodged in the other's home: both have every reason to host well, since the favor is returned. That is the spirit of mutual reception. A planet ill at ease in its sign finds support in the other, and the tension loosens a little. It is one of the nuances that make a reading feel alive rather than mechanical.
By domicile or by exaltation
