How to Use Your Crystals: Cleanse, Charge, Pair, and Spot a Fake

Cleansing: What Tradition Does, and What the Stone Allows

It’s a lovely image, and the ritual matters most for the threshold it marks. But before you choose how to cleanse, look at what your crystal is made of: that’s the one rule that doesn’t bend.

- Selenite is a variety of gypsum, hardness 2. Gypsum is slightly soluble in water: a long soak turns it milky, dulls its satin sheen, then slowly takes it apart. It scratches even under a fingernail, which tells you everything about how fragile it is.
- Pyrite is an iron sulfide. On contact with moisture, the iron oxidizes: the stone pits, dulls, and can literally rust. Water is off-limits.
- Malachite is a copper carbonate. Water, especially salty or acidic water, attacks the carbonate, dulls the green for good, and releases copper compounds: keep it dry, and wash your hands after handling it at length in its raw state.
- Turquoise and opal are porous: they soak up water, oils, and salt, and they remember it. Turquoise loses its color, and opal can craze and crack as it dries.
- Amber isn’t a stone at all but a fossilized resin, soft and sensitive to heat: hot water and salt damage it.
Salt, in fact, deserves a word: tradition adores it, the stone itself dreads it. Salt is abrasive and corrosive, and a direct salt bath eats away at soft, porous, or metallic stones. If you’re set on using it, use it indirectly: nest the stone in a small empty bowl, set that bowl in the center of a dish of coarse salt, and leave it overnight. In the morning, throw the salt away.
The rule that matters fits in a single line: the harder and denser a stone, the better it takes wet handling; the softer, more porous, more soluble, or more iron-rich it is, the more you cleanse it dry, with smoke.
Charging: The Moon, and the Trap of the Sun
Cleansing empties, charging fills, says tradition, which carefully keeps the two moments apart.
The full moon is the gentlest and most universal way to charge: one night on a windowsill, under the silvery light. No crystal fears it, and the monthly appointment gives the practice a rhythm you come to look forward to.
The sun, on the other hand, calls for caution, and for a very real reason. Some crystals hold their color thanks to color centers that are sensitive to light: ultraviolet rays fade amethyst, rose quartz, natural citrine, fluorite, and kunzite. Telling a Real Crystal from a Fake
The crystal market is generous with dyes, colored glass, resins, and reconstituted stones sold for something they aren’t. Consumer-protection bodies (the FTC in the United States, the DGCCRF in France) regularly point out that the names of stones and the claims that come with them are regulated: a stone has to be named for what it is, and a serious seller can tell you whether it’s natural, treated, or reconstituted. Labradorite
Its giveaway has a name: labradorescence. It’s that metallic blue, green, or gold veil that lights up at a certain angle, then goes dark the moment you tilt the stone. Tiger’s Eye

On a real stone, the bands are uneven, alive, never perfectly identical from edge to edge. Next, inclusions: natural quartz often carries tiny veils, fine fractures, or bubbles in irregular shapes, traces of how it grew, while glass freezes perfectly round bubbles, sometimes neatly aligned.
