Nine-year cycle
The nine-year cycle is the underlying rhythm of Pythagorean numerology: the personal years follow one another from 1 to 9, then the cycle starts over. Each position carries its own tone, from the 1 of beginnings to the 9 of taking stock and clearing out, passing through the 4 of groundwork and the 7 of inwardness. This repeated movement draws seasons of life: sowing, growth, harvest, release.
Placing yourself in your cycle
Work out your personal year by adding your birth day and birth month to the current year, then reducing to a digit from 1 to 9. That number places you in the cycle: a beginning, a middle, an end. Look at the years before and after too: the meaning of one season often comes clear through the ones around it.
Moving with the season rather than forcing it
Each position in the cycle has its right gesture: sow in 1, weave in 2, express yourself in 3, consolidate in 4, move in 5, take care in 6, turn inward in 7, harvest in 8, lighten the load in 9. When everything seems to resist, ask yourself whether you are trying to sow in the middle of a clearing-out season.
