For a few years now, astrology has been going back to its sources: the Greek and medieval texts, their precise techniques, long lost then retranslated. Tradition is not a dusty curiosity, it is a toolbox of striking rigour, where modern astrology often stays in interpretation. Here is the essential, without jargon: sect, the dignities, the lots, and the timing techniques that are making their return.

Where « tradition » comes from

Traditional astrology is the name for all the practices prior to the 20th century: Hellenistic astrology born in Alexandria (Ptolemy, Vettius Valens), then its Arabic and medieval extensions. That is where the individual natal chart, the houses and the lots were invented. Modern, psychological astrology came afterwards to graft on meaning and depth. The current « revival », driven notably by the work of Chris Brennan and Demetra George, puts these precise techniques back in the hands of practitioners.

Sect: the most forgotten key

First traditional reflex: is a chart diurnal (Sun above the horizon) or nocturnal? That changes everything. The Sun, Jupiter and Saturn form the day team; the Moon, Venus and Mars the night one. A planet « of its sect » plays with ease; out of sect, it strains. That is why the same Mars can be a healthy engine in a night chart and a source of friction in a day chart. Dignities: measuring a planet’s strength

Tradition does not settle for saying « you have Venus in Capricorn ». It asks: is this Venus well housed? Five dignities measure it, from domicile (at home) to fall (on hostile ground), by way of triplicities, bounds and decans. A richly dignified planet acts with strength and uprightness; a debilitated planet has to scheme. It is a grammar of strength, where popular astrology sees only a placement.

The lots and the Arabic parts

The lots (or Arabic parts) are points calculated from a formula, often the Ascendant plus two planets, adjusted by sect. The best known is the Lot of Fortune (the body, circumstances); the Lot of Spirit describes action and will. They add a layer of reading that the planets alone do not give, and serve as a starting point for the great timing techniques.

Timing: profections and zodiacal releasing

This is probably the most spectacular thing tradition offers. The annual profections activate a house and its ruler each year (a rule of disarming simplicity that explains, in passing, why the Saturn return falls around 29). The zodiacal releasing, for its part, cuts life into chapters and brings out the peak periods. These techniques give forecasting a precision that transits alone do not have.
