Glossary Enneagram

Self-preservation subtype

The self-preservation subtype is one of three instincts that combine with each of the nine Enneagram types. This instinct directs attention toward material survival: health, safety, resources, and comfort of home. Combined with the other two instincts (social and sexual), it produces the twenty-seven subtypes described by Claudio Naranjo. A person dominated by self-preservation watches first for what secures continuity and concrete autonomy, before social standing or the intensity of bonding.

If this is your lead instinct

When self-preservation leads, your radar locks onto the tangible: do you have enough to last, is your nest secure, is your body holding up. You may look more cautious, more frugal, more tied to routine than others of your type. This is not timidity. It is a faithful way of tending the ground that carries you.

Spotting it in yourself

Watch where your spontaneous worry runs. If it darts toward the overdraft, the empty fridge, sleep, or the house, your self-preservation instinct is likely up front. Naranjo noted this instinct shows in small repeated daily gestures far more than in grand statements about oneself.
