Passion (Enneagram)
In Naranjo’s Enneagram, the passion is the vice-emotion that dominates each type’s heart, drawn from the seven deadly sins expanded to nine. Each type has its own: anger for the 1, pride for the 2, vanity for the 3, envy for the 4, avarice for the 5, fear for the 6, gluttony for the 7, excess or lust for the 8, and self-forgetting sloth (acedia) for the 9. The passion is the emotional distortion; the fixation is its mental counterpart.
Recognizing yours
Your passion is not a sin to confess, it is the default emotional fold your personality takes under pressure. The 4 does not choose envy, the 7 does not decide its gluttony for experiences: it lights up on its own. Naming it begins to let you feel the moment it activates, before it leads the dance.
Its opposite virtue
Each passion answers to a virtue that unwinds it: serenity for the 1’s anger, humility for the 2’s pride, equanimity for the 4’s envy, sobriety for the 7’s gluttony, right action for the 9’s sloth. Naranjo saw inner work as this slow shift from passion toward virtue. You erase nothing, you rebalance.
