Venus retrograde: re-reading love and taste

What tradition reads in it

Roughly every eighteen months, the brightest body in the night sky vanishes from the dusk to be reborn at dawn. That is the astronomical event hiding behind Venus retrograde: at the heart of its loop, the planet slips between Earth and the Sun, stops being the evening star, and becomes the morning star. The ancients saw a metamorphosis in it, almost a descent: Venus leaves one sky to inhabit another. Tradition reads this crossing as a re-reading of love and taste. What you love, whom you love, what you find beautiful, what you agree to give (in money as in energy): the whole register of Venus turns and looks at itself. In practice, these weeks carry a stubborn reputation for returns: an old love who writes, a friendship left hanging that resurfaces, a desire you thought had gone cold raising a question that was never quite closed. Modern tradition suggests reading it less as an invitation to rekindle than as a chance to finally understand what that story came to teach you. It is also a time when taste wavers a little. Sudden aesthetic urges (cutting your hair, dyeing it, buying a whole new wardrobe) tend to read differently once Venus turns direct again; the old manuals suggest letting any choice that truly commits you ripen first. Not that the period is bad: it is inward. What it knots most truly are the reconciliations, the forgivenesses, the clarities about what you actually want from a bond. And there is this geometric marvel: over eight years, the five retrogrades of Venus trace an almost perfect five-petaled flower across the zodiac, the figure astrologers call the Rose of Venus. Each loop returns close to a point already visited eight years earlier: to understand the one ahead, remember the one before.

The rhythm

Venus goes retrograde for about forty days every eighteen months: along with Mars, it is the rarest loop in the zodiac, and one of the most keenly felt. The full cycle, from one conjunction with the Sun to the next, runs 584 days, and five of those cycles fit almost exactly into eight Earth years: the retrograde you are crossing today rhymes with the one from eight years ago, within a few degrees, in the same stretch of the zodiac. A Venus loop is therefore set in motion long in advance, and remembered long after.
