Uranus retrograde: the inner revolution

What tradition reads in it

Of all the retrogrades, Uranus may be the quietest to live through and the most interesting to talk about. Quiet, because it is massive and collective: nearly five months every year, everyone together, since forever. No one wakes up one morning feeling that Uranus has just changed direction, and if someone tries to sell you otherwise, the sheer regularity of the phenomenon is enough to put things back in place. Interesting, because Uranus is the planet of awakenings. Where Saturn builds, Uranus frees: it is the flash that shows the whole landscape in a second, the sudden urge to change everything, the break that sets you free. Moving direct, tradition lends it eruptions: events that jolt, departures, inventions. Retrograde, the current reverses: the revolution turns inward. The changes already underway drop a floor, leaving the surface of decisions to join the layer of certainties. You do not slam the door: you understand why you will eventually slam it, or why you no longer need to. Dane Rudhyar and the humanistic lineage read the slow planets as deep clocks, and that is the right use: Uranus retrograde is something you watch over months, not days. The period turns personal when the loop sweeps a sensitive degree in your chart: the same question of freedom returns three times, and the third time, usually, you know. For everything else, it is a slow tide turning over the seabed: imperceptible at the surface, decisive over time.

The rhythm

Uranus goes retrograde for about five months each year, nearly half the time. Since the planet takes eighty-four years to cross the zodiac, it stays roughly seven years in each sign: every annual loop therefore plows the same patch of sky for several years running, in successive passes back and forth. A given degree of your chart can receive three passes of Uranus in one year, then meet the planet again the year after: it is this slow insistence, more than the retrograde itself, that gives Uranus transits their weight.
