Saturn's retrograde lasts about four and a half months each year: an almost annual, collective phenomenon that the whole planet moves through at once. Tradition reads it as a turn of rigor toward the inside: the structures, commitments, and responsibilities built over the year get checked. What rests on sound foundations grows stronger; what was held up by habit or by fear quietly begins to crack.

Saturn is the architect of the zodiac: the planet of structures, of the long haul, of promises kept. It is when the retrograde loop crosses a sensitive point in your chart that the period turns personal: Saturn then passes three times over the same degree, and the same theme of responsibility comes knocking three times, more precisely each pass. Outside those appointments, Saturn's retrograde season feels like a long inner autumn: you tidy up, you mend, you honor your word. And what you honor during those months tends to hold for years afterward.

Saturn goes retrograde for about four and a half months every twelve and a half months: each year brings its loop, shifted slightly through the zodiac, since Saturn takes twenty-nine years to circle it. More than a third of the year therefore passes under Saturn retrograde: it is a season, not an event. The degrees swept by the loop receive three successive passes of the planet, which stretches the questions it asks of that zone of your chart across eight or nine months.
