What tradition reads in it

You do not wait for Pluto retrograde the way you watch for Mercury. The most distant planet of the astrological pantheon spends nearly half of every year in apparent retrograde motion; at that frequency, the turn is not felt, and it must be said plainly: this transit, taken alone, changes nothing about your day. What it tells plays out elsewhere, in the long haul. Pluto is the planet of transformations that take years: the true endings, the sheddings, the strengths you discover by crossing what you would not have chosen. Robert Hand describes its transits as symbolic processes of death and rebirth, where a spent form of life gives way to another. The retrograde, in that grammar, is the underground phase of the cycle: what the preceding months shook goes down to transform out of sight. Nothing seems to move at the surface; in the depths, everything keeps going. The truest image is geological. Pluto retrograde is the work of the root in winter, the slow pressure that turns one substance into another. If a deep transformation is moving through you (a grief, a professional shedding, the end of a long chapter), these months favor the invisible part of the work: understanding, releasing, letting what is finished be finished without forcing the next thing to be born. And when the retrograde loop passes back over a sensitive point in your chart, the process unfolds in three movements: the upheaval, the re-reading, the integration. Since Pluto stays anywhere from twelve to thirty-one years in a single sign depending on the era, these appointments are rare; when they come, they date a life. The rest of the time, its retrograde is a deep tide: there is nothing for you to do with it, it does its work.

The rhythm

Pluto goes retrograde for five to six months every twelve months, with the regularity of a metronome: the underground half of a yearly cycle. Its very elongated orbit makes it spend anywhere from twelve to thirty-one years in a single sign: the annual loops pass over the same zone of the zodiac for years on end, and a degree of your chart touched by Pluto is touched in successive waves, across two or three years. It is the planet of the long haul: its retrogrades are crossed more than they are watched for.
