Mercury retrograde: the essentials

Mercury retrograde names the stretches, about three times a year, when the fastest planet in the solar system appears to move backward through the zodiac for roughly three weeks. The rhythm

Mercury goes retrograde three times a year (four in some years), for about three weeks each time. The loop is bracketed by two stretches called shadow periods: the planet first crosses, moving direct, the degrees it is about to re-travel, then passes over them a third time after its turnaround. All told, each episode therefore colors six to eight weeks of the calendar. The three retrogrades of a single year most often fall in signs of the same element, and that element drifts slowly from one year to the next.
