The birth moon phase is the state of the lunar cycle on a birth day: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter or waning crescent. The calculator places the date within the 29.5-day lunation and recovers the fraction of the disc lit that night. The tradition reads in this phase a starting tone, the opening gesture of a cycle.

How do I find my birth moon phase?
Your date is enough: the calculator places it within the lunation in progress at your birth, the 29.5-day cycle that runs from one new moon to the next, and reads off the phase as well as the lit fraction of the disc that night.
What exactly are the eight phases?
The classic division of the lunation: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent. Four turning points and four transitions, depending on how much of the lit hemisphere is visible from Earth.
What does it mean to be born at the full moon?
The tradition lends full-moon natives an inner life in chiaroscuro: being born at the point of full visibility of the cycle, where the Sun and the Moon face each other, would draw a fertile tension between the drive and the need. An image to test out: a mirror, never a verdict.
Does the birth time change the phase?
Rarely. The Moon takes about three and a half days to cross each phase: only births falling on the exact boundary between two phases are settled by a matter of hours.
Where does this reading of the birth phase come from?
From a twentieth-century astrologer, Dane Rudhyar, who devoted a whole book to it (The Lunation Cycle, 1967): the light of your first night would say something about your relation to beginning, to ripening, to passing on. New-moon natives as instinctive sowers, full-moon natives as beings of relation and clarity, balsamic-moon natives as carriers. The tradition reads a background tone in it; up to you to see what your life confirms.
Is my birth phase the same as my moon sign?
No, and the confusion is common. The moon sign says where the Moon was in the zodiac (Moon in Cancer, in Capricorn…); the phase says how it was lit, that is, the angle it formed with the Sun (waxing, full, balsamic…). You can be a new-moon Moon in Cancer or a full-moon Moon in Cancer: same sign, two atmospheres. The two calculations complement each other, they do not replace each other.
