There is a scene many people know. You wake at three in the morning for no reason, the room looks too bright, and sleep will not come back. What unsettled everyone was how airtight the setup was. No moonlight could get in; no one could “know” it was the full moon and be swayed by it. If the effect was real, you had to picture something stranger: an inner clock tuned, somehow, to the rhythm of the moon. Cajochen himself stayed careful. His study had not been built to ask that question; it ran into it after the fact, on a small group. A find, not a proof, and he said as much.
And the nights where nothing shows up
Science would not be science if no one had checked. The very next year, another team gathered a far larger sample and found no link between the moon’s phase and sleep. More to the point, it flagged a flaw researchers know well and call “the file drawer problem”: striking results get published, null results sit in a drawer. Over time, the literature seems to tilt one way simply because the other side stays quiet. It is a fair objection, and it hits home.
Other analyses, on large groups, found nothing either. A striking result that holds up poorly to replication is no scandal: it is how research breathes, moving forward by contradicting itself. Keeping both Basel and its critics in view is the only honest way to look at this.
And then, in 2021, the picture got more tangled, beautifully so. A team led by Leandro Casiraghi and Horacio de la Iglesia set out to watch sleep not in the lab but outdoors, in real life: Indigenous communities in Argentina, some with electricity and some without, plus students in Seattle. There, a pattern came back. In the three to five nights before the full moon, people went to bed later and slept less, whether they lived without light or in the middle of a city. The likeliest culprit this time has a plain face: the evening stays bright longer as the full moon nears, and that pushes bedtime back.
Three threads, without settling on one

None of them is enough on its own. Make it dark, truly. Blackout curtains or a mask over the eyes take away the moon’s one real hold on you: its light.
