Ever felt like a different person in a certain city? Astrocartography puts words on that intuition. Your birth chart does not change, but the place where you stand changes the angle from which it touches the ground: elsewhere, other planets move to the foreground. Here is how it works, how to read a map by intention, and the limit to keep in mind, a place offers a stage, it does not decide for you.
The principle: moving the horizon
Astrocartography was popularised by the American astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s. The idea is simple and beautiful: your natal chart is fixed, but the horizon depends on where on Earth you stand. In Paris, one planet was rising at your birth; in Montreal, a different one occupies that position. To move the place is therefore to reorganise the angles and houses of your chart, without touching the planets themselves.
The relocation chart
The most direct way to see it: recalculate your chart for another city, with the same date and the same birth time, but other coordinates. Your planets keep their signs, but your Ascendant, your Midheaven and the spread of your houses change. A discreet planet, hidden in the twelfth house at home, can end up in full light in the first house elsewhere: a trait of yours stepping out of the shadow.
Planetary lines
On a world map, each planet traces four lines: where it rises (Ascendant), culminates (Midheaven), sets (Descendant) or passes at its lowest (Imum Coeli). Living near a line means putting that planet in the foreground in that place. A Sun on the Midheaven line pushes visibility and career; a Venus on the Ascendant line softens relationships and image; a Moon on the Imum Coeli line calls for home and roots.
Soft lines, demanding lines
The beginner’s trap is to label Jupiter « luck » and Saturn « misfortune ». The reality is finer. A Saturn line is demanding, but it is often a place where you build something lasting. A Mars or Pluto line is intense, transformative, not necessarily to flee. It all depends on what you come to find: the same place serves or weighs depending on your intention of the moment.
Reading a map by intention
This is where astrocartography becomes concrete. You don’t read a map « in general », you read it for a question: where should I settle? where should I restart my career? where can I breathe? Depending on the intention, you look at different lines (Venus and the Descendant for love, the Sun and the Midheaven for vocation, the Moon and the Imum Coeli for rest), and you cross them with what the person can take on, because a strong line asks for energy.
The limit, and how to learn to read yours
Let’s be honest: a place creates a terrain, not a destiny. Moving onto a beautiful line does not fix a life; the life you build on the spot counts far more than the line. - It can shed light, not decide. Astrocartography shows which places activate which parts of your chart: one line that favours career, another relationships, another introspection. But a place offers a stage; what you play on it depends on you. Reading it as a verdict (« move here and everything will be fine ») is the misreading to avoid.
- What is a planetary line?
