Moon journal · Last Quarter
Journaling at the last quarter.
grab your notebook ✦
The last quarter rises around midnight and reigns over the small-hours sky: half a moon again, but reversed, the shadow taking the side the light held at the first quarter. The symbol is plain: what played out then as building now plays out as taking apart. This is the phase of letting go, and probably the least loved of the cycle, because we'd rather begin than end. And yet nothing is sown in a crowded field. In your journal, the last quarter opens the questions you avoid the rest of the month: what is finished that I keep carrying, which grudge costs me more than it protects me, which promise made by another version of me deserves to be handed back? Writing these answers commits you to nothing: it is an inventory, not a great clear-out. But the inventory already changes everything, because it separates what weighs you down from what holds you up. In the app, you'll find this page again at the next last quarter: seeing what you set down a month ago, and finding that you really did set it down, is one of the quiet joys of the moon journal.
The prompts to open
-
What is objectively over in your life, and yet you keep watering out of habit or loyalty?
-
Which grudge, however justified, costs you more today than it pays you back?
-
What promise did you make at a time when you were someone else, and what would the person you've become do with it?
-
What could you forgive yourself for tonight, right here, with no conditions?
-
If you had to lighten next month by a single thing, what would leave first?
To close the page
Take what your page marks as heaviest and write it on a separate slip, in a few words. Fold the slip, then put it away outside your notebook: a box, an envelope, a drawer. You are not destroying it, you are setting it down. The nuance matters: you don't force a farewell, you make room for it.
