Wing (Enneagram)
A wing is one of the two types adjacent to the main type on the Enneagram circle. A type 4 can thus carry a 3 wing or a 5 wing, which colors the personality without replacing it. Most authors hold that one wing dominates, which yields noticeably different profiles within a single type. This idea explains why two people of the same type can look so unalike at first glance.
Identifying your wing
Once you've spotted your type, look at its two neighbors on the circle and ask which one speaks to you more. A 9 with an 8 wing asserts its place more, a 9 with a 1 wing leans toward order and rightness instead. Riso and Hudson describe the wing as a second engine: quieter than the type, but very much present in your daily choices.
How it shifts over time
Your wing is not fixed: depending on the seasons of your life, you may feel one or the other take up more room. Rather than labeling yourself once and for all, watch how these two neighbors balance your type. They offer you resources close at hand when your usual way of working starts going in circles.
