Basic desire
The basic desire is, in the Enneagram, the fundamental longing that answers each type's basic fear. In Riso and Hudson, it names what the personality seeks most deeply: integrity for the 1, love for the 2, recognized worth for the 3, inner peace for the 9. Pursued rigidly, this desire tenses into compulsion; recognized and welcomed, it becomes a compass again.
Recognizing it in yourself
Your basic desire is what you're after in nearly everything you take on, even when the paths seem to contradict each other. Ask what, once obtained, makes you feel that all is well: being right with yourself, being loved, being at peace. The answer that comes back effortlessly points toward your type.
When it tightens
The trap is to chase this desire by means that push it away: seeking love by forgetting yourself, peace by avoiding all conflict, worth by exhausting yourself with achievements. Riso and Hudson show how each type distorts its truest longing this way. Spotting that mechanism in yourself means finding the desire again in its plain form, the one that nourishes instead of pressing.
