REM sleep
REM sleep, named for the rapid eye movement that defines it, is the stage of sleep where the most vivid and story-like dreams arise. Discovered in 1953 by Aserinsky and Kleitman, it owes its alternate name, paradoxical sleep, to a striking contrast: the brain is nearly as active as in waking while the body’s muscles go slack, with only the eyes darting beneath the lids. It returns in cycles throughout the night.
A dreaming brain, a resting body
During REM sleep, something remarkable plays out: your mind stirs with images and stories as though you were awake, while your body stays deeply at rest. That slackening of the muscles protects you, keeping you from moving along with your dreams. It is this double face, an inner world ablaze and an outer one still, that earned this stage its name, paradoxical sleep.
Why it matters for dreams
Most of the dreams you remember in the morning come from this stage. It is here that the brain weaves its richest stories, its settings, its emotions. If you want to hold onto your dreams, waking at the end of a REM cycle is the most fruitful moment. Keeping a journal at your bedside helps you catch those images before they slip away.
The rhythm of your nights
Your night is not one unbroken stretch: it moves in cycles of about ninety minutes, alternating deep sleep and REM sleep. As the hours pass, the dreaming stages grow longer, so the longest, most teeming ones often arrive toward early morning. That is why you sometimes wake right in the middle of a dream, just before dawn.
