Secret animal (hour animal)
The secret animal, or inner animal, is the Chinese sign set by the hour of birth rather than the year. The day is split into twelve two-hour slots, each ruled by an earthly branch and its animal. The hour of the Rat covers 11pm-1am, the Ox 1am-3am, and so on through to the Pig (9pm-11pm). A birth at 9am falls under the Snake (hour of Si, 9am-11am). It is called secret because it reveals the most intimate part, hidden behind the year animal.
Finding yours
Note your birth hour and locate its slot. Mind the Rat: it straddles midnight, from 11pm to 1am. After that everything follows in two-hour bands. Few people know this sign, and that is exactly what makes it precious: it describes who you are when no one is watching, your rawest reflex.
The face of the intimate
If your year animal is the front the world sees, your hour animal is the back room. It is said to carry your inner life, your true drivers, what moves you quietly. When year and hour contradict each other, you often feel that gentle tension inside, between what you show and what you are.
