Dreams · the dictionary

Dreaming about airplanes when takeoff is out of your hands.

Dreaming of a plane condenses two things the night loves to work on: momentum (leaving the ground, gaining altitude) and control handed to others (the dreamer is a passenger, the pilot invisible). Takeoff, turbulence or crash, the scene often follows the state of a project that has demanded a lot. And no, dreaming of a crash before flying is not an omen: it is worry on repeat, not the future speaking.

What dream research says

The dreamed plane stages a situation waking life knows well: you have gained altitude, and you are no longer at the controls. Stories of crashes or turbulence multiply in periods when a project costly in energy (a launch, a move, an application, a pregnancy) seems able to fail with nothing you can do about it. The brain then picks the highest and most delegated machine in its repertoire to picture that vulnerable altitude.

There is also a well-documented case: people about to fly often dream of an accident in the days before. Nothing premonitory in that. The brain anticipates what worries it, the way you go over a lesson: it rehearses the dreaded scenario to wear down its charge. The frequency of dreamed crashes says nothing about aviation statistics, which stay stubborn: the car ride to the airport is riskier than the flight.

What the traditions have read into it

The plane is too recent for the classic grids, but the dream of rising into the air is ancient. Mystics read in it the elevation of the soul; the myth of Icarus hooked the other side onto it, the height that exacts a price when you fly too close to the sun. Several religious traditions have their own accounts of ascension, which belong to their contexts.

Modern dream keys recycled these readings into formulas: take off, succeed; crash, fail soon. To deflate: a dreamed crash says nothing about your flight next week or the fate of your projects. What the image keeps that is true is plainer: something in you measures the height reached, and wonders who holds the stick.

The question this dream asks you

Note the phase of flight: takeoff, cruise, turbulence, descent? And your seat: passenger at the back, by the window, or at the controls? A dream where you pilot does not ask the same question as a dream where you endure.

Then write around these questions: which project lifted you off the ground in recent months, and what would really happen if it failed? To whom have you handed the controls of something important, and with what degree of trust? Does the height you have reached thrill you or leave you dizzy?

Frequently asked questions

Dreaming of a plane crash before traveling, a bad sign?
No, and it is even one of the best-known anticipation dreams: worry about the coming flight repeats at night to wear itself down. No link has ever been observed between these dreams and real incidents. If fear of flying spoils your trips while awake, it is the fear that deserves your attention, not the dream.
And dreaming of missing your plane?
It is the cousin of the missed train, with a bigger stake: the plane takes you further, higher, and there is not another one in ten minutes. This dream goes with periods when a rare opportunity seems to be playing out now. It expresses the pressure, it closes no door.
