Astrology · the houses
The 7th house unions.
The 7th house is the house of unions: the couple, marriage, partnerships, the contracts that bind two people. Its cusp is called the Descendant, directly opposite the Ascendant: as much as the Ascendant describes how you move forward on your own, the 7th house tells of who you seek across from you, and what the relationship reveals to you about yourself.

What plays out in the 7th house?
Everything lived as a pair, within a named and reciprocal frame: the couple, marriage, the business partnership, the signed contract. The 7th house begins where the "I" agrees to become a "we", with everything that implies in commitment and compromise.
Tradition also files declared adversaries here: the lawsuit, the direct competitor, the person who stands before you in plain sight. It is consistent: ally or opponent, the other of the 7th house is always the one you look in the eye.
What does a planet in the 7th house look like?
Venus, at home in the 7th, speaks of a natural taste for connection: the relationship as something self-evident, sometimes as a condition for feeling whole. Saturn here tells of something else: a commitment you put off, test, then hold for good; saturnian unions often arrive late and last a long time.
Mars in the 7th gives whole, frank, sometimes head-on partners: the relationship becomes the place where you learn to argue cleanly. Three very different climates for one territory: it is the planet that colors the house, never the reverse.
An empty 7th house: doomed to be single?
No, and that is the most common misreading. An empty house is not an empty life: with ten planets for twelve houses, everyone necessarily has unoccupied sectors. It only means your relational life is not the central work of the chart; it is lived more simply, with less at stake.
To read it anyway, look at the sign on the Descendant and the planet that rules it: a Virgo Descendant points back to Mercury, and it is the position of Mercury that then tells of how you meet others. A full 7th house, by contrast, makes relationships the main stage: you discover yourself through others.
How do you spot it in your chart?
On the chart wheel, the 7th house opens at the Descendant: the point on the horizontal, on the right of the circle, at the exact opposite of the Ascendant. It is one of the four angular houses, so one of the most powerful: a planet near the Descendant always makes itself heard.
Note the sign on this cusp, any planets present and the ruler of the sign: these three pieces of information are enough for an honest first reading of the way you love and partner.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between the 5th and 7th house in love?
- The 5th house describes the play of love: the seduction, the flirt, the pleasure of loving. The 7th house begins when the bond commits: settled couple, marriage, partnership. You can have a lively 5th-house love life and a 7th house still waiting for its moment, or the other way round.
- Does the Descendant describe the person I will marry?
- Not a portrait of them. It describes the qualities you seek in another, often because they complete your own: an Aries Ascendant carries a Libra Descendant, and the fire seeks tact. It is a mirror of your expectations, not a personal ad.
